Are you hypersensitive to allergens that typically dogs carry such as their dander, urine, or saliva? If so, then this is going to be a list for you or anyone else you know that loves dogs but needs to find a breed that does not set off an allergy attack to the extreme that a normal dog typically would.
There are some dog breeds out there that do not shed at all. This means that they are not as likely to trigger one of these allergic reactions. Keep in mind that while these are considered hypoallergenic dogs, that there is no true hypoallergenic dog. Every dog has dander (what people are most allergic too). Dogs that dont shed are just less likely to get it all over your house or over you!
Just because you suffer from allergies does not mean that you can not have the love and friendship that puppies and dogs offer you. Non-shedding dog breeds are few, but they do exist. Not only will you not have to worry about allergies, but owning one means there will be less mess of shedding hairs around your house that you will need to clean up. Here is the list for your consideration.
Yorkshire Terriers are generally referred to as Yorkies and are considered a small dog breed that has a large personality. Their cuts are typically very long but they shed little to none. This breed requires grooming regularly and brushing to make sure there are no tangles. If you have any other pets, Yorkies love to socialize and get along well with other dog breeds. They are known to be territorial which makes them great watch dogs. If you are looking for a small breed that is a reliable guard dog and does not shed much, the Yorkshire Terrier is a great solution.
Number two on our list of dog breeds that dont shed is the adorable Dachshund. Known as teckel in Germany, these dogs were bred to be fearless hunters and are known for their large ears and hot dog looking bodies. Most people are familiar with these breed as soon as they see them, they are very unique. There are three different coat types that this breed has which are smooth, long haired, and my favorite, the wire haired. Like the Yorkshire Terrier, the Dachshund makes a great watchdog because they are suspicious much of the time, but even though they are loved by most, they can be irritable to some. If you have a small child, wait till they get older before you go with this breed as they do not go well together. All three coat types are known to shed very little.
Poodles were once known as Pudels or Caniche. They typically have a very dense coat that is curly meaning they hardly shed. This is great if you suffer from allergies. If you have seen a poodle with a very short coat, this is most likely because the owner did not want to brush them daily. If the dog has a longer coat, it will require more maintenance to make sure there are no tangles or matted messes. Poodles get along great with children and are very good watchdogs. If you are into the look of the poodle, then this may be the dog for you.
One of my favorite breeds that does not shed is the Shih Tazu. They have long coats that are silky smooth but does not shed. Because of their long coats they need to be groomed regularly and often the owners decide to clip their coat short to avoid maintenance. This is a great option if you just do not have the time to brush your dog daily. This breed is packed full of energy and loves to socialize. They need a leader in the household of they can start behaving very badly. Teach them early who is the boss and you will love these little guys.
These dogs were bred for the reason of keeping rats away from peoples houses. Their skills make them a great guard dog and are very affectionate toward their family. Miniature Schnauzers have a soft undercoat and a wiry overcoat that covers it. This breed really does not shed making them a great dog breed for allergy sufferers. Many owners like clipping the coat short except for the face which makes them look like they have a large beard.
I have seen the Boston Terrier called the American Gentleman. This is because of the typical markings on their face as well as their great personality. They have short coats that make for easy grooming and do not cary an odor. On top of that, they make great dog breeds that dont shed with little to no shedding. If you live in a small apartment, this is a great breed to go with because they rarely get over excited and are pretty quiet. If your dog does seem to have extra energy, take them out for a walk!
The Maltese is a small dog breed that has long hair but does not shed! As mentioned with most breeds, if they have long hair then they will need regularly brushing to make sure there are no tangles in the coat. If the coat is kept long, then this will take up a lot of time, so owners typically like to give them cuts. This breed is intelligent but also known to be a bit stubborn when training. They usually do not understand their size and have no issue challenging dogs much larger than themselves. Never the less, they are excellent dogs.
This non shedding dog breed is the national dog of Cuba which has wavy hair that requires good grooming. Unlike other breeds, this dog has two coats with an under layer and a top layer. This helps them with drastic temperature climates and conditions. The Maltese is also known to need lots of social attention so do not get this dog if you do not have time for them. This can cause negative behavior if they are left in isolation. That being said, they are great with children and are very smart.
The coat of this little breed has a double layer. The outer layer is very smooth and straight. The inner coat makes them resistant to the elements and is short and soft. This breed is very energetic because of their bred hunting skills. The shedding is little to none so do not worry about seeing tons of hair all over your clothes and carpets. West highlands tend to bark a lot which is a chance for them to release dander and saliva but the allergens are still kept to a minimum. Keep them brushed and clean and they are excellent pets.
The coat of the Bichon Frise is very thick and wavy. They do not poses an undercoat and this is a dog breed that does not shed. Their outer coat is very fluffy and takes a lot of upkeep to brush it every day. People who own this breed usually need to get professional grooming every few months which is not cheap. If you own one, you may also choose to cut their coat short to avoid heavy grooming. This breed is extremely friendly and they do not yap or bark much at strangers. If you have any other pets, the Bichon Frise will likely get along with them well. As a final note, they are non shedders but sometimes they are known to suffer from skin disorders which are ugly bald spots or sometimes irritations of the skin.
So there you have it, the top list of dog breeds that dont shed. As you can tell, this entire list is made up of small doggies, but do not let that stop you from getting one. They all make excellent pets and are perfect for the allergy sufferer in your household.
