The Vikings are known for being invaders, but they were also a cultured people who picked up on innovations from every place and people they conquered. In order to amass land and go on such extensive expeditions, the Vikings needed a hardy breed of dogs. The Icelandic sheepdog was bred to be on the lookout for any invaders, big or small. As a result, these dogs are loyal watchdogs event today. They are quick to bark at anything that enters your realm.  Some estimate the dog being present in Denmark and Sweden as far back as 8000 BC! Their primary jobs were to prevent the sheep from getting lost and to drive horses back and forth.
