Behavior

The beagle is one of the most friendly and joyful pets your family can get. The beagle will not only be affectionate, but a calm lover who is perfect for the household who has small children or other pets. If you want your pet to get along with other pets in the house, he will need to be raised from a young pup.

Beagles will love company after they get acquainted with them. Until that point they can sometimes remain a bit shy. This factor makes the beagle a great little guard dog because he will bark at random people who who walk in the door who he has never seen before. However, he will make friends quickly, so do not worry!

Beagles are absolutely in love with the outdoors but should only be left alone in a yard that is fenced. If your beagle is lonely, he will often bark and howl. Make sure to keep your pet inside the home when you are away so they do not annoy the neighbors.

This dog breed does not have any doggy oder like others and will not drool. Since beagles love to run around and sniff everything, keep them on a leash when you are taking them for a walk.

Beagles are also great exercise companions because of all the energy they have. Take them for a walk, a jog, or even a hike and they will be perfectly happy.

It does not matter if you live in the country or in the city, beagles are at home anywhere. They are moderate shedders and love to eat foot that is left out, so be careful!

Looks

The beagle is generally between 12 to 17 inches tall and will generally weight an average of 25 pounds. The coat on the beagle is short and coarse and is made up of a few colors such as white, tan, red, or black. Dead hair will fall out of this dog naturally so you will need to make sure to clean it up if your beagle is living inside.

Grooming

The Beagle has a very short coat that will be easy to take care of with just giving them a brush down every so often. If you want to make sure that there is less hair around your house from shedding, then each week make sure to groom your pet a few times for 5 minutes. This will help to cut down drastically on the hair being shed.

Beagle History

Scholars are not really sure where the beagle originated from, but dogs that are closely related to the beagle seem to have been around during the time of the Romans. The modern beagle that we all love today came out of England in the early 1800s. The main use of this dog breed was for chasing and hunting rabbits!

In the 1840s beagles came to America and quickly became one of the most popular dog breeds. They even have a Beagle Club over in England that was created in 1890.
