What to Consider Before Deciding to Breed Your Dog

You have decided to breed your dog in the hopes of spreading some of the wonderful qualities he possesses. But hang on for a second! The choice to breed your dog is a significant one that calls for considerable deliberation and an in-depth medical examination.

Consider the following points before beginning the process of breeding your dog.

Health Issues

There are a number of aspects to take into consideration, including your dog’s health, temperament, working ability and how closely the dog conforms to the breed standard. In addition, does your pet suffer from any medical conditions such as heart disease, obesity, dental issues, skin allergies or other conditions? If this is the case, you should probably refrain from having your beloved dog produce more puppies.

Your dog’s appearance and personality should be considered as a measure of how well it represents the breed as a whole. You can take your pet dog to Paoli Vet for a health check-up and to know if there are any health conditions it may be suffering without your knowledge.

Nursing Capabilities

Unfortunately, certain female dogs cannot produce enough milk to nourish their entire litter adequately. Other dogs lack the maternal instincts to take care of their newborns. At other times, one or two puppies may not know the appropriate way to nurse. It’s possible that to assist with the new puppies, you’ll need to feed them some formula from a bottle.

Even though the idea of bottle-feeding a puppy several times sounds beautiful, it’s more likely that puppies will need to be fed approximately every two hours to thrive. Therefore, you should consider this before going on with the breeding process.

The Cost

If you want to make money raising puppies, don’t assume that selling them will be an easy way to accomplish it! The costs involved with raising puppies, feeding them, medical tests, vet bills, having them vaccinated, buying any supplies they may need such as beds, and heat pads and the original purchase of the stud dog may surpass the costs of selling them.

Time and Commitment

If it turns out that the puppies need hand feeding during the first three weeks of their life, will you or another responsible adult be able to be there around the clock, seven days a week? Puppies need to be checked on and cared for on a consistent basis. Dealing with excessively whimpering pups will consume a lot of your time and cause you to lose a lot of sleep.

As they get older, they will require daily inspections and feedings in addition to having social interactions, being groomed and receiving training. Ill puppies demand a higher amount of medical attention than healthy ones.

Adopting and Relocating the Pups

There’s no doubt about it: puppies are adorable. But it can be more difficult than it seems to find homes for several puppies at once. Some dog breeds give birth to a couple of puppies whilst others are capable of having up to eight or more. The number of dogs that enter animal shelters worldwide is staggering.

With so many animals needing a home, finding a good home for your new puppies may be difficult.
