Behavior
The Coton De Tulear is a fun-loving, playful breed that makes a great addition to the family. This breed loves attention, so playful types will enjoy hours of games and activities by choosing this breed for a pet. They are the perfect dogs for owners who enjoy spending a lot of time with their pets, as this breed likes to be near its owner and shouldnt be left alone for too long. This breed is very agreeable to petting, handling, and cuddling, making them great lap dogs. This breed is also very friendly to most people and will get along with other humans and dogs if properly socialized. As a watchdog, the Coton De Tulear is alert and protective, but may warm up to strangers too quickly to truly guard the premises. This breed is known for its unique bark and growl-like sounds that can be useful for those wanting a watchdog to ward off strangers.
This breed is fairly easy to train when proper procedures are used. Like any breed, individual dogs can be stubborn and strong-willed. A firm hand and assertion of authority on the part of the trainer will go a long way. Positive reinforcement methods work best with this breed, as they are eager to please owners and love praise. They enjoy performing tricks and will need active playtime to use up their energy. The Coton De Tulear makes a great family dog that will get along with children and other pets. It is important to remember that children should be taught how to gently interact with the dog before introductions take place.
Appearance
At only 10 to 12 inches tall and 12 to 15 pounds in weight, the Coton De Tulear is a small breed. The Coton De Tulear has a long, cottony coat in white or white with black. In fact, “Coton” in its name is the French word for cotton. Some dogs in this breed have a downy undercoat. A black nose creates stark contrast against its white fur, and its large eyes seem expressive and give the breed a lot of personality. The Coton De Tulear has a tail that curls over the back.
Grooming
This breed requires frequent grooming due to its unique fluffy coat. The Coton De Tulear should be brushed daily, and extra hair in the ears and between foot pads should be gently removed. Despite their fluffy appearance, this breed does not shed much and will not require much bathing. It is a great choice for those concerned about allergies or dog hair around the house.
History
The Coton De Tulear is related to French Bichons and the Italian Bolognese. They originate in Madagascar, where it is believed the breed arrived with French troops. The breeds name, Coton De Tulear, comes from the French word for cotton (coton) and the city of Tulear in southern Madagascar, where the breed was a favored pet of royals. This breed has been relatively unknown until recent years and is becoming increasingly popular in Europe and America. Today, the breed is known as the “Official Dog of Madagascar”.
